Sunday Print Sess #19

Hey everyone – Sunday morning and I am printing again. 🙂

The video today talks about me printing some old Hedland prints and also starting the hand colouring of the Moon Girl little prints for the upcoming Print Change zine – out in July and I’ll be calling out for contributions at the end of May.

I also talk about the election and the weird sense of gratitude and relief that I have that Australia has chosen….well, a different path I guess. But also the frustration that I have that I need to be grateful in the first place. Not gonna lie, there are tears involved – if you are not feeling the best today then this is one to avoid. 😔

Wherever you are, I hope you are safe and as happy as possible. Take really good care – today and always. xx

Paper Women Mach 2…

No printing today peeps – had myself a night away with some good friends last night and strangely enough our motel room didn’t come equipped with a printing press to accommodate my Sunday morning print session! 😉

But yesterday morning I did this…setting Paper Women up at the Vines Road Community Centre. It looks a bit like an information display which felt pretty weird initially, but then I reminded myself that I designed Paper Women to fill all sorts of spaces where people who might not get into an art gallery would be. This lovely space, filled with people of all types and ages (yes – those are little kiddies practicing singing in the background and they were so good I had tears welling at one point) is exactly the right spot for Paper Women to be. ❤

If you are at all keen or available, the community centre is having a morning tea launch of the exhibition starting at 10.30 Friday 20 May. I’ll be there – smiling and nodding, politely answering questions about printmaking whilst making sure the real message behind Paper Women is loud and clear. Men’s violence against women needs to be stopped.

Sunday Print Sess #18

Hey peeps – Sunday morning and I was up bright and early printing, cause I’ve got a busy day today.

The video today is basically me waffling lol – about videoing, about the printing I did (a couple of old linos from Hedland that have aged just as well as I have 😆), about Mother’s day (commercial crock but I get it is important to some people in either a good or bad way and either way, I hope you are ok), and about me being distracted in general!!

I think mostly the distraction is because I’ve got my next Paper Women exhibition happening very soon – the official opening is on 20 May at the Vines Road Community Centre (come for the morning tea at 10.30 if you can – there will be cake!), but I’ll be setting it up next weekend.

I’m all set and ready to go after a big day yesterday and I’ll be putting the finishing touches on everything today. It is a weird shift to go from normally exhibiting in gallery spaces to ‘making things fit’ in a community space – I’ve never applied blue tack directly to one of my artworks before and it freaked me out!! 🤣 But taking Paper Women into community spaces was exactly what I wanted to do with the artwork, so I’ll get used to it…blue tack and all. ❤

Have as good of a day as possible. xx

My Story…

I feel like I am hiding out at the moment – the world feels like a shitshow and I am hunkered down in my room making zines out of old prints and stories. I will get back in activist mode soon I am sure, but at the moment this is where I am at. Click here to see my latest zine – We Have All a Part To Play, based on my 2015 solo exhibition at The Art Vault in Mildura.

But while I am putting my stories out there, here is another one of them. I have had an abortion. I had no regrets at the time, I have none now – all I have is immense gratitude and relief that I lived in a country where I could do this safely. Every single person who can have a baby should have that same option.

If you think I am wrong, I don’t care. If you are silly enough to think that making abortion illegal is about protecting babies and not controlling 51% of the population, you are wrong. If you think changes to legislation will stop abortions, it won’t – it will only stop safe abortions. And if you also think that this is only happening in the USA and it can’t happen here in Australia, you are delusional. Take care with your vote – this is not a game and you determine our future.

Perhaps the activist mode is still there after all lol. 🙃

My Town…

No printing for me today peeps – under the weather and tucked up in bed. Fingers crossed it isn’t covid and is just a reaction to the flu shot I got on Friday!

But thought I’d pop up – I finished it last night and it makes me smile. My Hedland peeps will get it most, but if anyone else wants to read about what life felt like for a White, 34 year old woman to move with a baby from Victoria to remote, regional WA for her husband’s new job in the mining industry and live there for the next 10 years – feel free to have a peek too. These are a series of artworks and associated stories that made up an exhibition I did called My Town in 2016. Click here to see the zine I’ve created of the artworks. 🙂

And if the orange cover is a bit harsh on the eyes…trust me, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen a sunset of this colour!! ❤

Sunday Print Sess #17

Hey peeps – I’m back!!

Had a long, leisurely printing sess today – I’ve recently moved all my art stuff back to our upstairs living room and this is the first time I’ve printed (and videoed!) in that space, which always puts me out of whack a bit.

But I had a good session and discovered that looking out at a view of the bay and the You Yangs is bloody distracting when you are trying to concentrate on your printing lol. I forgot to mention that in the video, but what I did mention was moving spaces, taking down the Paper Women exhibition from the Geelong Library yesterday and starting to work on getting it ready for the next exhibition at Vines Road Community Centre, plus starting to get into drawing for The Privilege-O-Meter.

Hope you are well and happy this lovely Sunday afternoon. Take good care. xx

Difficult Woman…

I turned 50 while I was on holidays and I got myself a little present ❤️.

I had lusted over this artwork since I first spotted it on @jadeleespaveyartist page a long time ago and finally decided to make her mine for my 50th when I found out she was still available earlier this year.

Jade promptly sent her to me but we have a rule in our house…no opening presents until the actual day. So for about 3 months I have patiently looked at the parcel waiting on my bench, then took it away with me on hols and opened it first thing on my bday practically drooling…just like a little kid. 😊

So, so worth the wait. 👏❤️

Paper Women…The Whole Story

I’m back peeps – I’m back! Well, kind of at any rate. I had a lovely holiday, but have come home to a house with covid, so I am trying to sneak in some Print Change work around dealing with home duties.

Luckily (or perhaps not!) it is the Easter holiday, so a nice quiet couple of days of home is going down ok…even if it is forced. 😆 Anyway – with the sick one tucked up in bed, I have been finishing up my new website pages related to Paper Women – The Whole Story. So far three wonderful women have given me permission to put their full submissions on my website and I thank them so much. If you have submitted and would like your full story shown (anonymously or named) just reach out and I’ll make that happen.

Click here to go to the webpage for The Whole Story.

I’ll be more in touch over the next week or so I’m sure as things settle down at home. In the meantime, I hope you are as well and as happy as can be. xx
